It’s always intriguing when a new coffee shop opens up out of the blue. Some are great additions to the scene, others not so much. Luckily, Blackbird isn’t just a great addition to the scene but one of the best in all of Brighton. Located in the South Lanes, directly opposite a Costa, the small shop makes a large statement.

As we entered, we were greeted by the friendly Zeynep, who was happy to talk about all things coffee related. On recommendation, we tried a Honduran Geisha on Aeropress and an espresso. The Geisha was smooth and delicious, with a delicate blueberry flavour and savoury quality that instantly brought blueberry muffins to mind. The espresso was well rounded and balanced, as all good espresso should be, with chocolate and caramel notes. We were even served a small dish of Turkish Delight to complement our drinks.

It is encouraging to see establishments like Blackbird opening in the redeveloped South Lanes, and this particular coffee house is a welcome inclusion to Brighton’s coffee community. Especially in an area full of high street chains, vape shops, and jewellers.
